The Emsella chair uses BTL’s signature high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology. Emsella works by triggering involuntary muscle contractions in your pelvic floor. Your pelvic floor muscles act like a cradle to support the bladder, uterus, bowels, and prostate. The contractions created by Emsella’s HIFEM are similar to a Kegel exercise you might do unassisted, but more powerful and much faster. The average person might be able to perform one Kegel per second—during one Emsella treatment session, you’ll experience more than 11,000 pelvic floor muscle contractions. With regular treatments, the Emsella chair will work to tighten the pelvic floor. Over time, this can help reduce symptoms of incontinence and erectile dysfunction as well as help sexual response.

What’s special about treatment with the Emsella chair is that it is entirely noninvasive and doesn't require you to disrobe. When the pelvic floor muscles are weakened, it can significantly reduce your quality of life. One of the greatest symptoms of having a weak pelvic floor is incontinence. There are a few types of incontinence:

• Stress incontinence: When strain is placed on the bladder, including pressure caused by laughing, coughing, sneezing, or working out
• Urge incontinence: A frequent urge to feel the need to urinate

When visiting LIVation for a Emsella consultation, our licensed medical practitioners will discuss your medical history and current symptoms to determine if you’re a good fit for treatment with the Emsella chair. If you are and you’re ready to proceed, you may have your first treatment that day. 

You will sit fully clothed on the Emsella chair and your provider will turn on the device. You may have to adjust your position on the chair until you feel a sensation comparable to a Kegel exercise. Patients describe this feeling as unusual (tingling, tapping, or pulsing sensations are all possible), but not painful. Throughout your session, your provider will check on your comfort level and gradually increase the strength and intensity of the treatment, which will take about 30 minutes. There is no downtime—after your appointment, you can go on with the rest of your day.

While some patients experience benefits after one treatment with the Emsella chair, the best results are seen after undergoing a treatment series of six sessions. We recommend two treatments a week for three weeks with maintenance appointments every six to 12 months.

Generally speaking, there are no Emsella chair side effects. However, you should consider treatment with the BTL Emsella to be a workout for your pelvic floor. Like any good workout session, an appointment can lead to some fatigue. At first, you might find that your symptoms may worsen slightly the day or two after treatment as your pelvic floor muscles adjust. With regular Emsella treatment, your pelvic floor muscles will strengthen, alleviating your symptoms and helping you feel better and live a more confident life.
